Rice Straw Sculptures In Japan

At the end of August, the Wara Art Festival takes place in Japan, where artists use leftover rice straw from the rice harvest, and create large sculptures.

The pieces are created with the help of students and local citizens, and with the cooperation of the Musashino Art University in Tokyo.

The Japanese term ‘Wara’ means rice straw, and every year the festival is held at the Kamizeki lagoon in Uwasekigata Park in Niigata City, where the sculptures will be on show until early November.
